EcoCAR Finals Fast Approaching

Year Two of the EcoCAR Challenge has proven to be a test of wills for the 16 North American universities participating in this fierce competition. Over the last academic year, EcoCAR teams have spent countless hours developing prototype advanced technology vehicles that will be judged in more than a dozen technical events at this year's competition finals, which will be held May 17-27, 2010. Events will take place at the GM Desert Proving Ground in Yuma, Arizona and at locations throughout San Diego, California.

Activities will commence with a Team Welcome Night on Monday, May 17th at the Arizona Western College. After a night of some fun, all their hard work will be put to the test during a series of technical and outreach events over the next nine days. The first leg of competition will take place May 18-23 in Yuma, where EcoCAR vehicles will undergo engineering tests similar to those conducted by the automotive industry to determine a prototypes readiness for production. Team vehicles will be judged by a variety of tests including a Safety and Technical Inspection, Dynamic Consumer Acceptability, Highway Stability, Braking, Acceleration, Autocross, and Emissions & Energy Consumption testing.

The competition continues May 23-27 in San Diego, where teams will highlight their efforts from throughout the year with presentations on the following categories: Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, Outreach and other various sponsored awards. In addition, on May 25th the group will come together for a Sponsor Social Networking and Recruiting event, where the Outreach awards will be given out along with a number of other special awards.

The Year Two Competition Finals concludes on May 27th with an Awards Ceremony at the House of Blues San Diego where awards totaling nearly $100,000 will be handed out and the first, second and third place winners will be announced.
